ETHICS: CULTURAL IMPASSE? Use the Think Screen for an Ethical Workout!

You are designing a low cost water supply and sanitation system for a community in the Mekong Delta region. As part of this you are required to design and deliver a training package on hygiene practices for the local community.

You have selected as your trainer a well qualified woman engineer who has spent 5 years working in the region and speaks the local language fluently. She is able to explain the training material and its benefits to the community.

However, the local community leader has told you categorically that he will not accept a woman as a trainer and that if you proceed, it will be considered an insult to the community.

The only male engineer who is available is not as qualified, has never worked in this region and does not speak the language.

It is proposed that you recommend the male engineer to carry out the training.
